Ray Gordon had worked for various tire companies in the North Florida and South Georgia areas, and in 1966 he decided to venture out on his own and start his own automotive repair business in Tallahassee. Ray operated the business as Ray Gordon Brake Expert until October 1972 when he sold the business to Bob and Charlie Elder.

The Elder brothers already owned and operated Tunex Auto Center specializing in tune-ups and air conditioning service. After the purchase of the brake shop, duties were delegated so that Bob ran the Tunex shop and Charlie ran the brake shop. The decision was made to call the brake shop Ray Gordon Brake Service in order to maintain the name recognition already established. A new logo was designed with the byline "The Brake Experts" to show that we were specialized in what we did. In the '70s there were few specialty auto service centers. Most service was done in service stations or general repair shops.

In 1972 we were located at 1906 S. Monroe in an old "barn-like" structure that had previously been home to Gravely lawn mowers and Studebaker Automobiles. In 1980 we moved into a new facility we built at 1930 S. Monroe. As the business grew an addition was built on the South Monroe building in 1983. Tallahassee continued to grow and so did Ray Gordon Brake Service. In February of 1989, we opened a second location at 2461 Greer Road, just off of Capital Circle N.E. This helped to provide service to our customers in the fastest growing area of Tallahassee.

Bob and Charlie decided to divide their auto repair business interests in 1988 in order to better develop their business plans. Bob retained the tune-up and air conditioning division, and Charlie retained the brake and CV axle division. This made Charlie and his wife Joanie sole owners of Ray Gordon Brake Sevice.
